It's a noir， noir worldYou would be hard pressed to find a better synergy in a writer/artist duo in today's comic world。 Google Criminal and usually what comes up first is an some opinion on how well Phillips and Brubaker work together。 It is true， of course， obvious from the first few panels。 You get the sense that Brubaker and Phillips are weaving a very complex tapestry， and while every arc can probably （somewhat） stand on it's own， I feel that the way the stories are told is going to really It's a noir， noir worldYou would be hard pressed to find a better synergy in a writer/artist duo in today's comic world。 Google Criminal and usually what comes up first is an some opinion on how well Phillips and Brubaker work together。 It is true， of course， obvious from the first few panels。 You get the sense that Brubaker and Phillips are weaving a very complex tapestry， and while every arc can probably （somewhat） stand on it's own， I feel that the way the stories are told is going to really help develop the complexity of the characters are more importantly the intricacies of their relationships。 Brubaker's characters are fascinating， either flawed noir archetypes that you can't decide to like or dislike， or plain evil greedy assholes。 Violence is swift and definitive。 The pacing is great， with the perfect ratio of atmospheric/introspections to action pages。 Phillips's art matches the grittiness of the story to a T， with somber colors， and gorgeous emphasized shadows。 It's very gritty and moody， his work on things like reflections and light is remarkable。 Large parts of the stories happen at night which plays well to his art。 Some of his cityscape， well you just can watch them and basically feel them。 It's truly amazing。As far as the stories go， this volume contains the series Coward， Lawless， and the Dead and the Dying （my favorite section）。 There are crimes， heists and thievery; booze， drugs and junkies， guns and violence， a little bit of love， a dash of sex， brief sparks of hope， and a protagonist （Leo） who prefers to running over shooting and another one who is a former soldier seeking revenge over the death of his brother （Tracy Lawless）。 Very rarely have I been swept so quickly in a story。 Indeed， right from the first pages， I knew that Criminal was something special。 To read and to re-read。 And I don't even usually enjoy crime stories that much。 。。。more

Si has leído algún cómic del tandem Brubacker-Philips， sabes lo que se puede esperar de ellos， cuando se refiere a género negro en cómic muy pocos autores se pueden considerar a su altura， las historias， los personajes， las ambientaciones。。。 poco se puede objetar aquí。Criminal es un nombre completamente descriptivo， esta colección contiene historias de delincuentes， drogadictos y maleantes de distintos tipos， gente de mal vivir que se mueve en los bajos fondos de center city， la parte central de Si has leído algún cómic del tandem Brubacker-Philips， sabes lo que se puede esperar de ellos， cuando se refiere a género negro en cómic muy pocos autores se pueden considerar a su altura， las historias， los personajes， las ambientaciones。。。 poco se puede objetar aquí。Criminal es un nombre completamente descriptivo， esta colección contiene historias de delincuentes， drogadictos y maleantes de distintos tipos， gente de mal vivir que se mueve en los bajos fondos de center city， la parte central de la ciudad de Philadelphia。En este tomo tenemos dos arcos largos y tres números unitarios。 Podemos encontrar historias como la de un talentoso ladrón capaz de llevar a buen puerto cualquier trabajo siempre que no implique violencia， la de un hombre que vuelve a la ciudad donde creció para averiguar quién asesinó a su hermano， la de un veterano de vietnam con una deuda que pagar， la de un barman que cuenta sus últimos días como boxeador o la de una femme fatale que busca venganza tras haber sido maltratada en su juventud。Brubacker enlaza las distintas historias de forma que todas tienen puntos en común， Philips establece un ambiente que te atrapa y le da a las historias un valor añadido， este tomo además cuenta con extras como algunos artículos， ilustraciones， bocetos， muestras del proceso creativo y el comic-trailer que crearon los autores para promocionar la colección。 Una edición genial。 。。。more

"Úplnej karneval sebelítosti。 Naštěstí nebyl zvanej nikdo jinej než já。" Drsná škola par excellence， noir až do morku kostí。 Trio samostatných komiksových novel， které ukazují， jak široké mohou být žánrové mantinely， pokud máte tvůrce， co mají načteno/nakoukáno a mají co říci。 Předně ve všech příbězích hraje prim soustředění na rozhárané charaktery， bez toho by to ani se sebelepší zápletkou nešlo。 V noirovkách potřebujete postavu， které v každém momentu a za všech okolností rozumíte; jakkoli s n "Úplnej karneval sebelítosti。 Naštěstí nebyl zvanej nikdo jinej než já。" Drsná škola par excellence， noir až do morku kostí。 Trio samostatných komiksových novel， které ukazují， jak široké mohou být žánrové mantinely， pokud máte tvůrce， co mají načteno/nakoukáno a mají co říci。 Předně ve všech příbězích hraje prim soustředění na rozhárané charaktery， bez toho by to ani se sebelepší zápletkou nešlo。 V noirovkách potřebujete postavu， které v každém momentu a za všech okolností rozumíte; jakkoli s ní nesouhlasíte， protože （jak v tomto žánru také jinak） prostě dělá nepěkné věci， kdy být příběh nahlížen optikou jiné postavy， tak se jedná o ústředního záporáka。 Což se zde podařilo v jednom každém příběhu， linii， scéně。。。 Všude a u všech。Nejlepší je hned ústřední "Zbabělec" o heistu， který se tak trochu vymkne z rukou。 Nemám co bych vytknul nad rámec "jaktože už to dávno není zfilmované"？ Druhý příběh "Lawless" působí značně westlakovsky/thompsonovsky。 Sází na atmosféru a pozvolnou výstavbu。 Možná až moc， protože závěr působí příliš zhurta a neadekvátně investovanému prostoru。 Finální "Mrtví a umírající" s Pulp Fiction like přístupem ke struktuře "jedna událost， tři pohledy" jsou rovněž vynikající。 První dva segmenty jsou bez výtek， problém je s tím třetím， který tomu měl nasadit emocionální tečku。 Jenže jen naplno říká to， co již bylo mezi řádky jasné v předchozích dvou a tak působí poněkud nadbytečně。Každopádně je to hnidopišství。 Pokud máte pro žánr slabost， tak tohle nechcete minout， i kdybyste nakrásně komiksem pohrdali。 Navíc， jen tak mimochodem， je to i skvostná publikace， které někdo věnoval kus péče （a to i na straně tuzemského vydavatele）。 Už jen těch bonusů， od obligátních obálek přes eseje na téma "jádro pudla žánrovek" až po drobnohled pod pokličku vzniku kresby。 。。。more

Un generoso regalo me permitió hacerme con esta serie al completo。 En Criminal el tandem Brubaker+Phillips -una de las parejas artísticas más aceitadas de la actualidad en el mundo de la historieta- nos plantean conocer a partir de una serie de miniseries （valga el juego de palabras） el submundo criminal de una ciudad。 Con personajes que son protagonistas en algunas y secundarios en otras （o simplemente no vuelven a aparecer más que para ser apenas mencionados） Brubaker nos va presentando una so Un generoso regalo me permitió hacerme con esta serie al completo。 En Criminal el tandem Brubaker+Phillips -una de las parejas artísticas más aceitadas de la actualidad en el mundo de la historieta- nos plantean conocer a partir de una serie de miniseries （valga el juego de palabras） el submundo criminal de una ciudad。 Con personajes que son protagonistas en algunas y secundarios en otras （o simplemente no vuelven a aparecer más que para ser apenas mencionados） Brubaker nos va presentando una sola y larga historia: el imperio criminal de los Hyde， una verdadera dinastía que se continúa durante varias generaciones en el poder。 Y sin embargo， los Hyde no son nunca los protagonistas， sino que son casi siempre los jefes o incluso los antagonistas de los distintos personajes que van protagonizando esta saga e incluso a veces no tienen peso， pero son sí siempre la constante， la referencia permanente。 En total son 6 los volúmenes que la componen -dos libracos en el integral que tengo yo- y aunque hay algunas historias que podrían considerarse "de relleno" （me da la impresión que Brubaker pensó en un principio que haría más historias y por eso en la primera mitad no se puso tan "selectivo"） la gran mayoría son de una contundencia envidiable。 Destacan， logicamente， las más extensas: "Coward" （que creo que es la mejor de todas， con la ejecución de un asalto y sus consecuencias narrada como ya quisieran hacerlo guionistas de todo tipo de lenguaje de todas partes del mundo）， "Lawless" （que cierra algunas puntas de la primera historia pero al mismo tiempo nos presenta al que será EL personaje de la serie: el ex soldado Tracy Lawless）， "Bad Night" （donde se revela la identidad del autor de la tira que venía apareciendo dentro de la historieta， el policial "Frank Kafka"）， "The Sinners" （con el regreso de Tracy Lawless， lo más parecido a un protagonista que tendrá toda esta serie） y "El último de los inocentes" （de un brillante malalechismo）。 El apartado gráfico de Phillips no tiene la menor mella。 Es un narrador estupendo， que construye con dinamismo todas sus secuencias， no abusa de las referencias fotográficas y hasta cuando la situación lo requiere （que dibuje al estilo "Archie" por ejemplo） experimenta y sale más que bien librado。 En suma， una serie imprescindible para todos los amantes del policial （en especial el crook story） y la buena historieta。 。。。more
